The main branches of industry developed in Odessa are mechanical engineering, oil processing, metal and wood working, chemical and food industry.

Odessa was founded as a sea port and developed influenced by European culture and with a participation of European politicians and military men, constructors and architects, bankers and businessmen.
Owing to commercial activities, including export and import, the city grew up with an unexampled pace. At the beginning of the XIX century Odessa became a capital of Novorossiysky region, covering the whole southern part of Ukraine, a link connecting Russia and Ukraine with other European countries.

Odessa is a multiethnic city. City authorities had always contributed to inflow of Greek, German, Armenian and other migrants. Russian and Ukrainian peasants and craftsmen, Jewish merchants settled Odessa. This multi-ethnicity has continued to this day.

One of the first governors of Odessa was the duke Richelieu. He dreamed of building up a small Paris. It had to be a cultural centre of a European level.
